What happens when Mercury is Retrograde?
When Mercury is retrograde, from the Earth’s perspective, Mercury appears to move backward and retraces its path through the zodiac.
Mercury’s expression is internalized and can create problems, reversals, delays, and cancellations at worst.
You may need to revisit a plan due to miscommunication, missing meetings and alarms, breakups, or reconnecting with exes.
But you can thrive during this retrograde by using this period to review, rethink, reprioritize, restructure, replan, and rework the Leo area of your life.
What does Leo represent in Astrology?
Leo in astrology is the fifth sign of the zodiac.
If you want to think archetypically, Leo would be considered the King or Queen of the Zodiac, embodying leadership, regality, and generosity.
Leo also signifies cheerfulness, determination, brilliance, and intellect, as it is ruled by the Sun.
What does Mercury retrograde mean in Leo?

Suppose you look back at your favorite places to document your life, such as journal entries, photos, calendar, or social media posts.

But let’s think about Leo…
As Mercury is moving backwards in Leo, officially starting on July 17th, that is when life could turn on its side and ask you to slow down and think about the “Leo Archetype” and how you hold space for it in your life.
To help you begin your reflection process, consider what brings you happiness (even if it doesn’t involve financial gain or recognition).
Leo is the star of the show and loves all forms of appreciation, from money to a high-five, they can’t get enough of it – just look to your close Leo Sun friend.
But as Mercury retrogrades here, you might find that what gave you joy is either missing or has dissipated in your life on some sort of scale.
The upcoming month can be an opportunity for you to bring back more joy in your life, even if you don’t make money from it or receive recognition.
It starts with YOU.
Once you are determined to bring joy back into your life, naturally, the crowd and appreciation follow, but that isn’t the goal.
Leo teaches that the goal is not only to have joy and Goodness in your life, but also to protect it.
As Mercury stations retrograde, it will be in sextile to Venus, the planet of love and pleasure.
With this configuration present during the stationing retrograde day, it serves as another exclamation point to focus on what brings you deep pleasure and love in your life.
Somehow, Love in action has gone missing, and you must hold space for her to appear again.

Grab a journal, ask yourself, “Where has my joy and love gone?” and just write for the next 5 minutes without any judgment.
You’ll be surprised to see what comes up.
Mercury Stationing Direct
As Mercury stations direct on August 11th, he’ll be gaining some help from Saturn retrograde and Neptune retrograde in Aries, removing obstacles with Mars in Libra, and revealing sudden breakthroughs thanks to Uranus.
However, the direct adversity from Pluto opposition could bring about some uncomfortable information that has to be confronted.
Luckily, we may already have some insight into what that would be, due to the Pluto-Mercury square around May 12, 2025.
Although the stationing direct could be stressful, remember that there is some support in having the tough conversations and doing your best to find a new solution to the problem that stems from Goodness.
Overall, this Mercury retrograde lesson focuses on how to bring more joy and pleasure into your life and having tough conversations to remove what blocks you from having it.
